Origen de algunas palabras

HACKER

De origen incierto, no parece estar relacionado con el verbo “hack” (cortar, hachar, derribar). Quien obtiene o altera información dentro de otros sistemas informáticos. También se los conoce como “crackers”.

HANDICAP

Deriva de “hand in cap”, lit. “mano en gorra”. Ventaja otorgada en ciertos deportes a jugadores o equipos considerados en inferioridad de condiciones. Relacionado con la práctica usual en la Inglaterra del siglo XVII en la que se utilizaba una gorra para realizar un sorteo que determinaba la ventaja a otorgar al contrincante menos calificado.

HAPPY HOUR

Lit. “hora feliz”. Horarios en que los bares expenden bebidas alcohólicas a precios reducidos.

El verbo "to be"

El verbo "to be" en inglés es equivalente a los verbos "ser" y "estar" en castellano. Su declinación en el presente del indicativo (simple present) es la siguiente:

Yo soy/estoy................................................I am

Tu eres/estás...............................................You are

El(ella es( está.............................................He/she/ it is

Nosotros somos/estamos.............................We are

Vosotros sois/estáis.....................................You are

Ellos/ellas son/están.....................................They are

Se suelen utilizar contracciones de estas formas:

I am	I'm
You/we/they are	You/we/they're
He/she/it is	He/she/it's

Su declinación en tiempo pasado (simple past):

Yo era/estaba (fui/estuve)...........................................................I was

Tu eras/estabas (fuiste/estuviste)...............................................You were

El/ella era/estaba (fue/estuvo)....................................................He/she/it was

Nosotros éramos/estábamos (fuimos/estuvimos).........................We were

Vosotros erais/estabais (fuisteis/estuvisteis)...............................You were

Ellos/ellas eran/estaban (fueron/estuvieron).................................They were

El verbo "to be" se puede utilizar como un verbo ordinario y en este caso sirve para dar información sobre el sujeto:

I am old.	Yo soy mayor
The car is red.	El coche es rojo
It is cold.	Hace frio (el día está frio)

También se utiliza como verbo auxiliar para formar las formas continuas:

I am running.	Yo estoy corriendo
I was running.	Yo estaba corriendo

Y para construir la forma pasiva:

The table is made of wood.

La mesa está hecha de madera

Otro uso del verbo "to be" es seguido de infinitivo y se utiliza para dar órdenes de una manera un tanto impersonal, especialmente con la 3ª persona, o también para comunicar un plan:

He is to solve that problem.	El debe resolver ese problema
They are to help you.	Ellos deben ayudarte
I am to travel next week.	Voy a viajar la próxima semana

E- MAIL

Abreviatura de ELECTRONIC MAIL, lit. “correo electrónico”. El prefijo “e-“ es utilizado en un gran número de expresiones tales como: e-book (libro electrónico), e-commerce (comercio electrónico), e-buyer (quien realiza sus compras a través de la red), etc.

ESCORT

Lit. “acompañante, escolta”. Persona que ofrece servicios sexuales a título oneroso. Originalmente se aplicó el término al servicio de acompañantes a eventos sociales provisto por agencias especializadas.

ESTABLISHMENT

Grupo de personas e instituciones que a través de su poder e influencia controlan la vida pública y resisten cambios en el orden político y social. Podría traducirse como “el sistema” o “la clase dirigente”.
